Another too blue to be true troupe is Beaucoup Blue, whose CD, "Out of the Woodwork", offers a dozen classy classic wails, marked with sincerity and verve. This, my Caucasian friends, is what acoustic blues should sound like but so rarely do. Father and son, David and Adrian Mowry, deliver a surprisingly soulful performance. Their singing is tough and controlled and their guitar work is crisp and mournful. This well produced product is available at a limited number of venues, on www.cdstreet.com or from the Mowrys, themselves at www.beaucoupblue.com

Beaucoup Blue - "Out Of The Woodwork": Full cd - US

No matter the format (full band or acoustic duo) Beaucoup Blue has always been a father & son project. David and Adrian Mowry released with their band two albums: Blooming On Harm's Limb en Love Breakin' Down. Nevertheless, as a duo they continued writing songs and performing on stage. The response of their fans and friends was that big that a first album just had to be recorded. Unlike their previous work of Chicago and Texas blues, "Out Of The Woodwork" is a completely acoustic album. Although it contains a lot of blues songs, they found also their love in American Music, music from singer-songwriters like Bob Dylan, Philip Baptiste, George Khoury and others. A handsome range of instruments like six and twelve string guitars, slide guitar, dobro and the two voices will give you a good idea of what you can expect. David and Adrian switch easily between blues songs like J.L Hookers 'Come Back Baby' and 'Mystery Train' by Sam Philips/Herman Parker.Jr, to traditionals like 'Corina, Corina' here in a version of Bob Dylan. A little bit later they rise from the Mississippi Delta in an immensely beautiful version of Robert Johnson's 'Walkin' Blues'. Covers and reworkings mix nicely with own compositions like the tender 'Crying Won't Help You' and the roots number 'Shiver To The Bone'. The recording quality is outstanding and the songs obviously benefit from this. Out Of The Woodwork is in my mind genuine craftsmanship.

Beaucoup Blue
Out Of The Woodwork
Self-produced

The father and son team, David and Adrian Mowry respectively, is rooted in what they call American music. They are based out of Philadelphia. Doing ballads and music like Little Walters’ ‘Mean Old World’, Bob Dylan’s ‘Corrina, Corrina’ and It Takes A Lot To Laugh-It Takes A Train To Cry’, Jimmy Reed’s ‘Bright Lights, Big City’, Robert Johnson’s ‘Walkin’ Blues’, Junior Parker’s‘ Mystery Train’, and Huddie Ledbetter’s ‘C.C. Rider’. An acoustic masterpiece, play with the volume down.

"BEAUCOUP BLUE / LOVE BREAKIN' DOWN / (2002)
***** 5 STARS

I listened to this CD from this Philiadelphia (USA) area quartet over an over again and it grew on me with every spin. David Mowry voice rings like a smooth, smooth fine-aged bourbon. The groove is R&B, but with a upbeat mellow modern blues twist that, on this CD works just about everytime. If Steely Dan had stayed together and got the blues, it might sound similar. This band is tight, well-rehearsed and knowledgeable in their craft. Catchy riffs and inventive arrangements make this CD a must have! Boys, hire Wally Smith the keyboard player immediately!!

From Blues Revue Magazine -

Philadelphia father-and-son guitarists David and Adrian Mowry head Beaucoup Blue, a four-piece augmented by keyboardist Wally Smith, whose work on Hammond, Rhodes, and acoustic piano is invaluable on Love Breakin' Down (self-release). Well-written blues are knocked out by a first-rate group of musicians, with guitar particularly fine. "Cup o' Tea" and the driving, slide-drenched title tune scream for attention.

Beaucoup Blue, a foursome from Philadelphia (USA), just released a second album. It's a delicious mix of classic electrical Chicago- and Texasblues, with a warm soulsound as a constant line. There are also clear links to jazz and Latin-American music. David Mowry, singer/guitarist and songwriter of the band, pleases with vocals, drenched in whisky. Songs as 'Love Breakin' Down', 'Cup O' Tea' and a bit more funky focused 'Sweet To Sour' are equal in deliciousness and devotion for the blues. A very solid and professional rhythm section consisting of Richard Glover on bass and drummer Jeff Sheard push frontman David and guitarist Adrian Mowry (yes, David's son) to pure class. Further on the album, they slow down a bit, by which the intensity to keep interested weakens. Not that songs as the quiet 'Baptized In The Blue' and a jazzy 'Carousel' have to give in concerning musical quality. There's more: guests as Wally Smith on Hammond/piano and Edgardo Cintron on percussion in 'You And I' and 'Runway Walk' undoubtly give a big extra to this album. Personally the first 4 songs are more 'driven', still I can't deny the impression this is a band with a great potential. I certainly can recommend this to the one who doesn't like the current guitarviolence, which seems to be in control the last years.
